5-Brake Light Mod

I was recently inspired by a post on the Vortex referencing this guy's site for adding the rear fog bulbs, and using them as brake lights, so tonight, for a total of like $3, I went out and did it.

Basically, I followed his instructions for adding bulbs, etc. with a few modifications:

  • I looked at the rear-fog functionality, and don't know how useful it really is. When I added my Euroswitch, I went back and added this functionality. Left side only, just as designed. Again, I don't know how often I'd use it, but I figured I'd add it anyhow.

I also am not a fan that the mod typically only adds the left-hand rear fog, without adding a separate cross-wire between the two tail light housings.

  • I didn't' like the idea of splicing wires, where I don't have to. Looking at the back of the bulb-carrier, I found that I could pick up the brake signal from the back of the housing (near the top, marked "BR").
  • Because I'm not doing the rear fogs, I don't need any diodes.

A few notes:

  • Beyond a doubt, the hardest part of this mod is getting the bulb carriers in and out. It gets quite a bit harder with the additional bulb added. I found it much easier with the wiring harness removed (just wiggle the connector back and forth, it seems "latched" but isn't)
  • In some of the recesses, where you connect the jumpers, there are 1, 2 or 3 pins. In my experience, they're all connected.
  • You cant tell what's connected and what's not (with an ohm-meter) with bulbs in...
  • Be sure to wipe the bulbs with alcohol after you touch them... duh.
This article needs pictures taken.
Eventually, I'll get unlazy enough to do so, but until then, you'll just have to use your imagination, like your mom taught you.
