Jetta Headlights

Ok, I'll be the first to admit it... I'm a light freak. I was almost excited when my Jetta's headlight burnt out, so I had an excuse to run out and put Sylvania Osram Silverstars in.

From the get-go, I wanted to add fog lights. The last time I did this was to my Cavalier, where I buried a pair of "Blazer" after-market units under the front cowl.

Anyhow, this time around, I want to go OE. VW has 2 OE styles available: Either in the lower grill corners ("The Passat Look") or inside the headlight housings (Like a Jetta GLX). I come to find out that the grill-insert style (Made by Hella, as the Micro DE) recommend against being used in intercooled VWs, since the right grill is used for intercooler air.

Hella E-Code headlights seem like a good option, though I'm not sure they're worth it, from a cost standpoint, since they don't use the US 9007 bulb... So I'd have to buy new lamps as well. I did find some knock offs over at Racer-Union, that take the standard bulbs, and have fogs in the housing.

Since I already have a Euroswitch, wiring up the fogs should be a fairly straight forward matter. The following bits are required:

  • 2x 000 979 225 - Repair Wire for Eurowitch connection, as well as adding pins to headlight connectors
  • 2x 3B0 972 742 - Wire Seals (for waterproofing the headlight connector additions)
  • 000 977 227 - Repair Wire for relay socket
  • 000 979 114 - Repair Wire for relay socket
  • 000 979 135 - Repair Wire for fuse panel
  • 141 951 253B - OE Foglight Relay
  • 443 937 527 - Relay Socket (installs in main relay panel under drivers dash)

I'm not entirely sure what all this costs, but repair wires are usually about $3 at the dealership (double-ended) so that's about $20 in wires, and maybe another 10 for the relay and stuff... This should be manageable for under $30. Plus, you'll have a ton of half-wires left when you're done.

Once I get my install done, I'll post photos and whatnot.
