Alphapower 2200

Update: This thing is officially toast. It seems to have a problem whereby it doesnt produce correct output. Some devices work on it, some don't. In that light, I suspect that it's a phasing issue. I do think that it toasted the power supply in the file server. Please donate to my New Fileserver Hard Drives Fund.

This is the huge UPS that Bob (who I used to work with) scored for me. It's had some issues mainly related to cords and batteries. Of late, it's had some issues with overheating and dropping the load when trying to switch to battery. I recently got around to pulling it from service (with Jason's help... it's HEAVY) so I could inspect it.

I expect that there's some work to do; I might replace the internal battery pack, or just remove it all together, and use external battery only. I don't really want to part with my stash of batteries (I'm saving them for an Electric Vehicle), but the show must go on.

Update: I've removed the internal pack, and relocated a ton of stuff down into the lower battery space. This allowed me to shorten the chassis about 6". Cutting UPSs in half with an angle grinder is not fun. I'm now in the final stages of reassembly, having added a fan, adjusted the cover, and done some general upgrades / removal of non-essential components. I'm currently trying to find 4 batteries to make a 48v external string. I'm discovering that about half my stash is junk, batteries that go soft under load, etc. Ron says he wants to discard some batteries, perhaps some of those can be pulled into service. What I really need is a Desulfator... Perhaps I could salvage some of these SLAs, then. For now, off to the recycler.

Final Update: The Alphapower is no more. Following the (undermentioned) failure, I've decided to decommission it for good, and scrap it. This UPS has been more than it's fair share of trouble, and I'm looking for something a bit more efficient. For now, the 1500 from upstairs is in the rack, and the circuits rearranged accordingly. During the scrapping process, I discovered a bit of a problem with one of the wires leading to the large AC capacitors. It seems that something got hot and melted the wire from it's connection. I know there'd been issues with the transformer heating, and I'd added a fan to help cool that (it worked well), but after this wire failed (which was all but impossible to detect without totally tearing down the UPS), the transformer heating issue went away, as did the unit's ability to make decent power. (It'd started making what my non-true-RMS meter called 50VAC, which didn't run some transformer-based devices)... Like I said, I'm done dealing with this thing... Perhaps a better option will present itself.

APC 1500 RS

I bought this UPS to replace my dead Sola 650 (my first UPS). A friend of mine got me a great deal on it at a certain huge electronics store that he worked at. I think I paid like $130. Today, it powers my workstation in all it's Multimon glory, along with anything else I see fit in the office.

APC 500 "Office"

This is something I picked up from Micah. He got rid of it because it randomly dropped the load. I think it's related to him having had it overloaded, as I've had it powering my TV for quite a while. At this point, it's on a shelf, in need of a new battery.

This was my first UPS; I don't remember much about this one, except that I killed the charger in it when I doubled it's battery capacity to get more runtime :)... Sorry about the terrible photo; It was taken with a cheap, <1mp Kodak digital, and it's what I've got.
